The morning the test is negative

One negative answer isn't a verdict on the months ahead

This month counts too

For most couples it takes a few months, and for most people the NHS's threshold is a year — with the exceptions listed below. Which means a month with no result isn't a month lost; it's an ordinary part of those few months.

What's worth knowing today

  1. 1

If you tested early, the answer isn't final yet. An early negative can't be relied on. Try again a few days later.

  2. 2

You don't have to be strong today. Being upset by something you wanted isn't a contradiction.

  3. 3

Tell someone. This is heavier alone, and you don't have to tell everyone — one person is enough.

  4. 4

None of it is wasted. When the next cycle starts, that same calendar is useful to you again.

When it's time to ask

  • if the second test was negative too and your period hasn't come — the NHS says talk to a doctor at that point
  • after a year of trying
  • if you're 36 or over, sooner than a year
  • and whenever you want to — you don't have to wait for any threshold
