How much cycle length varies

21 to 35 days, and all of it is healthy

The numbers

The average is about 28 days, but anything between 21 and 35 days is within the normal range. Two people can have completely different cycles and both be healthy.

What's normal

  1. 1

A few days either way. Your own cycles differ from month to month too. That isn't irregularity.

  2. 2

Change over the years. The first years after periods start and the years close to menopause are naturally more irregular.

  3. 3

Know your own number. What matters is less the number than that it stays roughly the same from month to month.

When it's outside the range

  • gaps shorter than 21 or longer than 35 days that keep repeating
  • a period that lasts more than 7 days
  • a pattern that has changed suddenly and for no reason
