Why it changes around now
Normal discharge has no strong smell and is clear or white. Near ovulation it becomes thinner, clearer and more slippery — the NHS says it gets a bit like raw egg white. That change, with no tools and no cost, is the sign that ovulation is close.
How to follow it
-
1
Look at the change, not at one day. What matters is how it differs from the past few days.
-
2
Write it down for a few months. Once you see it beside your cycle, your own pattern becomes clear.
-
3
This is not a substitute for contraception. If your goal is avoiding pregnancy, this sign is not a method of contraception.
When it's an infection
If you have pelvic pain or a fever, be seen the same day. And book an appointment if:
- the colour, smell or texture of your discharge has changed
- the amount has suddenly increased
- you have itching or soreness
- it hurts when you pee
- you bleed between periods — or, if you have sex, after sex, or sex is painful
These usually point to a treatable infection — but the diagnosis is a doctor's job, not a guess at home.
