The signs of ovulation

Three signs of ovulation — and which one helps timing

What your body shows

Fertility awareness methods record three things every day: your body temperature, your discharge, and your cycle day. Of those three, only one can be followed with no tools and no training — and the ovulation kits people reach for belong in the same group as the temperature.

What each one is good for

  1. 1

Discharge — the one you can see yourself. Near ovulation it becomes thinner and stretchier, a bit like raw egg white.

  2. 2

Temperature and kits — daily work, and taught. These are part of the fertility awareness method and doing them properly has to be taught; the NHS itself points you to a specialist to learn.

  3. 3

Ovulation is counted from the end. Usually 10 to 16 days before your next period — the same thing the app's prediction is built on.

  4. 4

This is not a substitute for contraception. If your goal is avoiding pregnancy, these signs are not a method of contraception.
