Stress and anxiety are on the NHS's list of reasons for irregular periods. Which means what you suspected is right: a hard stretch can shift a cycle.
What's worth knowing
-
1
One thing to rule out first. If you've had sex without contraception, a test answers that question before stress explains anything.
-
2
Shifted isn't broken. A cycle that moves after a hard stretch is not a sign of damage.
-
3
Look at them side by side. When you see the hard month next to the shifted cycle, the pattern shows itself.
-
4
Expecting it takes the edge off. Knowing this month may run late takes some of the worry out of the wait.
When to look for another reason
- irregularity that lasts more than three cycles
- irregularity along with severe tiredness, weight change, or changes to your skin and hair
- periods that stopped after weight loss, eating too little or hard training — don't wait three cycles for this one
