Why this question has a clear answer
How much you bleed varies a lot from one person to the next, and comparisons don't help. But “heavy” isn't vague; there are a few simple markers you can count yourself.

If the bleeding has frightened you. If a pad or tampon fills in less than an hour and the bleeding goes on for several hours, or you feel dizzy, faint or breathless, get urgent help now — see below. Otherwise: a dark bath towel or sheet and water in reach, then lie down. If the bleeding is very fast, don't be alone.

Count, don't guess. Log how many pads or tampons you change each day. A plain number says more than any description — for you, and when you talk to a doctor.

Think about your iron. Heavy bleeding takes iron with it, and the tiredness that follows is real.
When to get help now, and when to book
Get urgent help now if: a pad or tampon fills in less than an hour and the bleeding goes on for several hours, or the bleeding comes with dizziness, weakness, a racing heart or breathlessness.
Book an appointment if you see any of these every month — this is the NHS's list:
- you have to change your pad or tampon every 1 to 2 hours, or empty your cup more often than recommended
- you have to use two products together
- your period lasts more than 7 days
- you pass clots larger than about 2.5cm
- blood soaks through to your clothes or bedding
- you put off everyday things because of your period
- you often feel tired or short of breath
Bleeding between periods — and, if you have sex, bleeding after sex — is a reason to be seen on its own, apart from this list.
