Cycle back pain

Why your back knows what week it is

Why the back

For many people, period pain doesn't stay in the tummy — it reaches the lower back too. The NHS puts massaging your back next to massaging your tummy on its list of things that help period pain.

What helps

  1. 1

Heat or cold. A hot water bottle or an ice pack — whichever you reach for, wrap it in a towel first.

  2. 2

Walk a little if you can. Lying down for long stretches usually doesn't help. But today, whatever eases your pain is the right thing.

  3. 3

Massage. That same gentle massage of the lower back.

When back pain has nothing to do with your period

These are emergencies — get help now:

  • numbness, tingling or weakness in both legs
  • loss of feeling around your genitals
  • a change in your control of peeing or pooing

And if your back pain comes with a fever and chills, or it started suddenly and is getting worse fast, be seen the same day.
