Nausea and an unsettled stomach

Why your stomach and gut feel it too

Why your stomach and gut join in

Nausea, cramping, diarrhoea and headaches are among the things the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists lists alongside period pain. For most people the first days are the worst, then it settles.

What helps

  1. 1

Smaller meals. Several small ones instead of two heavy ones.

  2. 2

Water. If you have diarrhoea, you need more fluids.

  3. 3

Warmth. What helps cramps helps here too.

  4. 4

The things you already know. Most people know which foods upset them at this point. Skipping those for two or three days helps.

When not to wait

Sudden severe tummy pain, especially with vomiting, is urgent now. And if these come with your period, be seen the same day:

  • vomiting stops you drinking water
  • you have a fever
  • the pain gets worse each day instead of easing
